Assorted lifehacks and oddities. NO KINGS

  • Jan 26, 2024 by HTV9

    1. Upon entering a room and forgetting what you came in there for, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Sometimes can help.
    2. Clover and alfalfa seeds can be put on pastures or lawns before the location’s usual period of several weeks of rain to help with soil fertility. I’ve tried it and it works.
    3. Dandelions and other weeds in lawns feed honeybees. Better to leave them there.
    4. Facial cleanser makes great jewelry cleaner for most semiprecious and precious gems and metals. Suds it up with just enough water with fingers, swish in a bowl of water maybe with some more facial cleanser, and rinse under running water.
    5. Lip balm makes good hand salve for chapped skin if that’s all you got
    6. Granular organic fertilizer is good to put on gardens when the ground is sodden and you can’t do anything else out there anyway

  • Improved Pizza Box Laptop Holder

    Jan 26, 2024 by HTV9 in Upcycling

It started to squish. Filled it with toilet paper tubes and wound up squashing those down to fit inside the pizza box.

February 12, 2024 Update: Made it unnecessarily hard to type even after entirely filling it with as many toilet paper tubes as it would hold. I think this DIY doesn’t work.

February 20, 2024 Update: Using it again, as my keyboard is starting to fail anyway and it does seem to keep the laptop cooler. Not liking the flimsiness of this whole setup, think it could use some tinkering.

July 9, 2025 Update: This thing destroyed my laptop. Don’t do it.

  • Fragrancing The Place

    Jan 18, 2024 by HTV9 in Fragrance

This was an interesting experience, to put it mildly. In most apartments and homes, there is an air intake for the HVAC system. Most of the time it’s in a closet with louvers to allow the air to enter, or in a metal intake box, say, in a basement. You either stash air filters for the HVAC system in the closet door or you put it directly on the metal intake box. In order to fragrance the whole place efficiently you can put something fragrant very near the air intake. Then the fragrance comes directly out of the vents. That’s the basic idea. So in our place we have a closet for this. I opened it and stuck fragrant stuff on the cement floor there. Here’s how it went.

Attempt 1: Unlit candle, perfume bottle partially unscrewed, essential oil bottle partially unscrewed. I let that sit there for a few hours. Came back and noticed the HVAC unit had a warning that said “pilot light comes on without warning.” Uh oh. So if aerosol alcohol-based substances or volatile substances accumulate too much in there, kaboom. Not viable option, darn.

Attempt 2: What you see in the image. I dripped a bunch of lavender essential oil on the bar of soap, grabbed a potpourri sachet and some unlit incense, crammed that on a plate and stuck that in there. Later I retrieved the incense figuring it was probably overkill. If I’d been a bit wiser I’d have let the soap absorb the essential oil for a week or two in order to not oversaturate the area with volatile oils. But I was impatient. So this still has the potential to blow up my living quarters just not with a very high chance of happening. My place smells great. You could avoid the worrisome issues in your place by just using scented soap in the first place.

February 7, 2024 Update: The scent wore off so I added a bunch more lavender essential oil to the soap bar. Now the place smells like lavender again. Looks like each month it needs a bit more added.

  • Fruit Fly Traps

    Jan 12, 2024 by HTV9 in Uncategorized

Duo of fruit fly traps. The one on the left is a classy standard design of paper cone made of printer paper taped together with a couple of pieces of tape at the bottom sticky side down and the excess paper cut off at the top. The one on the right is another paper cone taped together with the sides crumbled inward. The one on the left has the sides taped down horizontally in a ring around the cup. On the right, one piece of tape on either side holds down both sides of the paper cup. The idea is that fruit flies are attracted to whatever is in there, fly down the hole, and can’t fly back up again and so drown. So far there’s about 20 fruit flies in these so they’re working. All of these will work as bait in the bottom:

    Fruit juice
    Wine
    Raisins and water
    Fresh fruit in water

What’s actually in these is a little soda and juice on the left, plus a sugar cube, plus orange juice, water, raisins, and sugar in the right one.

February 12, 2024 Update: The original fruit fly trap on the right is still operational and luring fruit flies in there. It needed some tap water to refill, requiring taking out the cone first, pouring, then taping it back on so as to not dampen the cone itself, but other than that still works.

  • Pizza box laptop holder

    Jan 12, 2024 by HTV9 in Uncategorized

There is a pizza box under all that, I promise. With printer paper to cover up the laptop art I have going, and the label of the pizza box, it functions to make having a laptop on one’s lap more comfortable. It also cools the laptop more effectively than having it on a lap table or a couple of notebooks. How to make one is simple:

    1. Order a pizza. Eat it.
    2. Open up the pizza box over the trash can and shake/brush out all the crumbs
    3. Close it back up and put it on your lap or the surface the laptop rests on, and put the laptop on top.

That’s all there is to it

February 12, 2024: Even after a couple of edits to the basic design, namely some then more toilet paper tubes in there and squashing it down, it seems to have made it harder to type by deforming the keyboard. Darn. Without serious editing this doesn’t seem to work and I’ve gone back to my usual composition notebook “laptop stand” to rest the laptop on.

July 9, 2025: This thing destroyed my laptop. Don’t do it.
